Maharani Kempa Nanjammanni Vani Vilasa Sannidhi the Regent of Mysore in 1899 who donated 30 acres of land for the Experimental Agricultural Station at Hebbal and selected Dr Lehmann, a German Scientist to start research on soil crop reaction with Laboratory in the Directorate of Agriculture. Sir M Vishveshwaraiah, the then Diwan of Mysore (1912-1919) play a major role in building up the Mysore Agriculture Residential School at Hebbal in 1913 and delegated Dr Leslie Coleman, the primary Director of Agriculture, Mysore to head this School to offer a PhD in Agriculture for 15 students yearly. The government of Mysore headed by Sri S Nijalingappa (CM), in April 1963 chose to set up UAS along the lines of Land Grant College of USA and passed the University of Agricultural Sciences Bill (Act No. 22) to turn into the Law which got the approval of the President of India on 25th May 1963. The CM granted 1300 acres of land to Gandhi Krishi Vigjana Kendra Campus. Dr KC Naik, MSc, PhD (Bristol) working with USAID appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor on 12th June 196 by the Government. Dr Zakir Hussain, the Vice President of India was inaugurated the UAS on the 21st Aug 1964 in the presence of Mr Chester Bowles, the then US Ambassador to India, and Sri S Nijalingappa ( CM ). The GKVK campus was inaugurated on 12th July 1969 by Smt Indira Gandhi ( PM of India ).
The Colleges of Agriculture at Hebbal and Dharwad, Veterinary College at Hebbal, 35 research stations located throughout the Karnataka, and 45 ICAR schemes which were with the State Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries were transferred to the newly built-up University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore on October 1, 1965. After that, Marine Product Processing Training Centre (MPPTC) at Mangalore and also the Krishi Vignana Kendra, Hanumanamatti, Dharwad were transferred to the UAS, Bangalore. Home Science College was inaugurated in 1974, to grant education in rural home science at Dharwad campus, besides setting up a College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and College of Post Graduate Studies at Hebbal.
