Sundar Pichai – The Google man from India

Sundar Pichai, who was born as Pichai Sundararajan, is an Indian American business executive and popularly known as the CEO of “Alphabet Inc.” and its subsidiary “Google LLC”. Pichai was born in Madurai,  Tamil Nadu, India. Pichai’s father was working as an electrical engineer at GEC, the British conglomerate and his mother was working as a stenographer. His father additionally had a manufacturing plant that produced electrical elements. Pichai grew up in a small flat in Ashok Nagar, Chennai and had a Hindu upbringing.

Education

Pichai completed schooling in Jawahar Vidyalaya and completed Class XII from Vana Vani school at
IIT Madras
. Afterwards, he earned his degree from IIT Kharagpur in metallurgical engineering and is a distinguished alumnus from that institution. He also earned a silver medal at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur and was awarded a scholarship to study M.S. in engineering and materials science at Stanford University. As Pichai’s father wasn’t financially well off. It was hard for his father to send him overseas for higher education. But, his father somehow decided to spend $1000 from family savings to cover his travel and extra expenses. He holds an M.S. from Stanford University in Material Sciences and Engineering in 1995. He lived in the United States thereafter, working briefly for Applied Materials. And then he holds an MBA in 2002 from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar, respectively. He was one of the most talented students.

Joined Google

Before joining Google in 2004, he was working at McKinsey & Company in engineering and product management at Applied Materials and in management consulting. Afterwards, in 2004 Pichai joined Google as the head of product management and development. He initially worked on the Google Toolbar, which provided those using the Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox Web browsers to reach the Google search engine simply and quickly. Afterwards, he was directly involved in the development of Google’s own browser, Chrome, which was released in 2008. He is also one of the superior brains behind the development of Google Drive. That same year he was promoted as a vice president of product development. In March 2013, Pichai added Android to the list of Google products. He has been credited with making the Android team more open. Before taking charge of Android from Andy Rubin, the Android Unit was observed as an unusual unit within Google. In 2011 he reportedly was aggressively proceeded work by microblogging service Twitter, and in 2014 he was praised as a possible CEO for Microsoft, but in both the situations, he was given large financial packages to remain with Google.

Becoming CEO of Google

Therefore, when Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin declared the formation of Alphabet Inc., in August 2015, Pichai was selected CEO of Google, which was reorganized as a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. In December 2019, Sundar Pichai replaced Larry Page as CEO of Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. Larry Page step down as the CEO a Pichai was appointed as the CEO of both “Google” and “ Alphabet Inc.” Pichai had been recommended as a contender for Microsoft’s CEO in 2014, a position that was given to Satya Nadella.

Personal Life

Pichai is married to a chemical engineer Anjali Pichai, from Kota, Rajasthan. They both were classmates at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. The couple has two children – Kiran Pichai and Kavya Pichai. He is a fan of the “ FC Barcelona,” football club and watches every single match of the club.

Achievements

In December 2019, it was announced that Sundar Pichai got a massive package of $240 Million in performance-based stock awards over the next three years. It was the highest performance award package given to any executive of Google ever, and the second-highest ever in the world of tech, after Apple’s Tim Cook. Sundar Pichai is enlisted in Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020.
